me and Edith Wharton, also hair and furniture stores

The wonderful people over at Image featured Story of a Girl in their most recent email update, and I guarantee you it’s the only place Edith Wharton will be mentioned in the same paragraph as me. It’s actually a really amazing review and makes me feel all warm and literary inside. Funny story: the actual original version of the review that went out in the emails had a typo that made it sound like Deanna’s father was caught having sex with a high school boy. Talk about your problem novel! Read the review here. (Scroll down about halfway.)

I’m getting my hair cut today and I hope to God Anika is not reading this right now because I’m…seeing someone else. This is hard for me. I’m very loyal to Anika but I need a new perspective on my hair and I’ve heard from stylist people that if you want a new look, you have to go to a new person. I feel like I should send Anika some money anyway.

There’s this local radio commercial I’ve been obsessing over lately. The jingle goes something like ”Potato Barn, Potato Barn, the best in furniture, take exit 288, Oh Potato Barn Potato Barn, Furniture.” Every time it comes on, I’m thinking “Why is a furniture store called Potato Barn?” and this thought goes around my mind for the next ten minutes, at least. It could work as a name for a restaurant, except for maybe the “barn” part. Potato Shack, maybe. Or Potato Alley. Potato House, Potatoes Inc., Potato Potato Tomato…but not Potato Barn. Neither is it a suitable name for a furniture store. Has anyone been there? Is there a potato theme? I can’t let this go.

Let me know what you think of your new hair person…I may want something new soon. Julie broke her ankle and can’t work and there’s no way in hell I can make it to March 20 for my next cut.

I hate those Potato Barn commercials. Completely unrelated, I’d never shop at a Dress Barn simply because of the store’s name.

How did the hair turn out? I totally get that feeling of cheating on your hairstylist. I once ended a relationship with a hairstylist that I liked because I let someone else cut my hair and I couldn’t bear to face him. I think what you are saying is true though, and I have heard from my hairstylist friends that they really don’t mind if you switch it up once in a while. I’m very loyal to my hairstylist, but I always feel like in the back of my mind there is someone out there that will give me the haircut that will change my life. (Next time I’m in New York I am so getting an appointment with Nick Arrojo.) I often wonder if this is what marriage would be like for me. I’ll be loyal…but will I always wonder?

The hair turned out fine. It is not a new look. It’s a trim. Which is fine. Of course I did walk out with Utah hair even though I tried to tell her as she styled it that I don’t like that much volume. I always have to run home, shower, and re-do it. I need to figure out how to say, “I like my hair to look natural. I just want it to hang off my head in a natural way that is attractive and not messy. Your 3 round brushes and 18 products really aren’t necessary.”
Sarah – the place is Studio 9 across the street from my office here.

Okay, I know, the Potato Barn jingle is super annoying. If I hadn’t been there before I had heard it, I probably wouldn’t have gone. That said, it has AWESOME furniture. Not your run of the mill store. I think it is all imported. I have a beautiful mustard cabinet, I found a blog that also loves their furniture, and she’s posted some cool pics. It’s a must check-out shop!!! Seriously. I don’t work there or anything. http://toniaconger.blogspot.com/2007/01/potato-barn.html
