a sad night in realityland

If you haven’t watched the Project Runway finale yet (and have somehow managed not to hear who won, stop reading. Same goes if you haven’t yet watched last night’s America’s Next Top Model.

Now.

After the screams of horror, the wailing, the gnashing of teeth, and eight hours sleep, I’m prepared to say that I understand the PR judges’ decision. I see it as the show not wanting to get a reputation as safe and boring, wanting an innovator, and probably wanting more credibility for PR in the real fashion world. The presence of the founder of fashion week, rather than a TV personality, as a guest judge was probably an indicator that this was going to be different than past seasons. That said, I didn’t get the polka dots (is that what Japanese nightmare demons are wearing now?) or the giant black clogs that half his models wore, or really anything else, but…whatev. That’s basically how I feel whenever I look at high fashion magazines, so I guess it all fits. My personal favorite? I loved what Laura did. The clothes were so glamorous and beautiful and I thought she did some very different things than she had done during challenges. I seriously thought it would be her or Uli. Michael…sigh. I love him, but it seems that the further along he got in the show, the less he really understood his own voice.

I still love PR and think it has so much to say to writers and other artists. There is so much about editing, about choices, about taking risks, about knowing yourself. In one of Tim Gunn’s podcasts he said, “…when I see students at Parsons staring off into space I’ll ask the question—and usually know the answer—’What are you doing?’ ‘Well I’m trying to get inspired.’ And I just say, ‘Go to a movie, go walk up the street, go look at things, go read a book, listen to some music! Don’t sit here and wait to be struck by the muse. It’s not going to happen. Or if it does, it may take so long that you’ll miss your deadline.’” Oh, Tim Gunn. I heart you.

No amount of sleeping on it will ever help me understand what happened on America’s Next Top Model. It’s not like Jaeda is providing so much interest in the house that she’s worth keeping for ratings. It’s not like AJ had been inconsistent with the exception of last night’s photo. It’s not like they didn’t all suck to an embarrassing degree whenever they were called upon to talk (that’s a whole different story – how could they all be SO BAD?). I just don’t understand. That show has to win me back.
