No offense to my homeland of San Francisco, but Seattle is now in close contention for life after Utah. It’s more beautiful, bigger, cheaper, and we’ve already got good friends there both of the writer and non-writer variety. We just need to coordinate our families to migrate, too.
I wish I had pictures of the Jesus Girls event to show you, but the lights were so bright that everyone I snapped reading got totally washed out and I failed to take pictures of the mingling. But, good crowd! The readings made me eager to read the rest of the essays of the book, a copy of which I’ve yet to get my hands on. (I also feel compelled to tell you, now that I know of it, that Mars Hill Graduate School is not affiliated with the Mars Hill mega church that apparently has some kind of controversial leader.) A highlight of the event and perfect ending to it was Audrey Molina’s tale of youth group talent shows and Chubby Bunny which, ideally, is “played until someone dies.” Many thanks to all who came out, old friends and new. And thanks to everyone who showed me hospitality and a good time throughout the trip, including the Enterprise Rent-A-Car people who are always the best and didn’t try to scare me into buying the extra insurance.
Today is the last day of life before The Autumn of My Discontent My Book Release really starts gearing up. I’m nervous. My September-November calendar is somewhat frightening for an introvert like me who needs large doses of down-time. And p.s. I’m writing another book which is due in the not-so-distant future. At the same time, I’m excited and grateful to be going to so many fabulous places and looking forward to talking to people about Once Was Lost. If I’m hard to get hold of and slow at responding in the next few months, it’s nothing personal. I do plan to keep up the blog best I can and report from the road when there is something of interest to report. Meanwhile, coming this week here at sarazarr.com:
- An interview with the divine E. Lockhart
- More info on upcoming Denver & Boulder events
- aaaand something else, a surprise, which will also be a surprise to me as I have not thought of it yet.
Have a great week!

Se-at-tle! Se-at-tle! It was good to see you, and your reading was great!
Glad to hear you had a great time!
Can’t beat the Pacific Northwest! :)
The Chubby Bunny comment cracked me up. Ah, those were the days…. However, that game is one tradition I opted NOT to pass on when I became a youth leader. ;)
Good luck with your events this fall. I hope you find enough down time in the midst of all the excitement.
It was only last week at church that I was introduced to “Chubby Bunny.” The two women (girls??) that did it used cherry tomatoes from our church’s urban garden. It was quite amusing.
Good to know Seattle is cheaper than San-Fran. I haven’t been to the West Coast since I was 10.
And remember, the one place NO ONE can follow you is into a stall in the bathroom. (Well, no one above the age of 5, but I don’t imagine many of your readers are under the age of 5.)
xo,

Come back soon!! And bring your hubby too. :)
